We care about babies and infants.  We write our blogs to provide you with tips and information for you to use when making decisions about your baby.

However, My Mom always told me not to just take her word but to do my own research.  Then make a decision using my own judgement with the facts I found.  Whether you decide to use organic baby bedding, blankets, etc… for your baby, it is your decision.  We just want to provide some information to help you make your own decisions.

Tick, Tock

Monday, November 23, 2009

Babies are very fragile when first born.  We know that we must support a neworn’s head because muscles have not developed enough to allow the newborn to support his own head.  As parents, we accept the responsibility of caring for the newborn’s every need. And we are responsible for the quality of care given.

Besides feeding and diaper changing, we need to learn about proper care.  We provide a firm crib mattress and place the infant on his back to sleep. Care of an infant is not just those basic things, it is also caring for the infant’s mental and emotional development.

Although a newborn actually sleeps most of the time, he requires a lot of your time and energy. An infant also needs your attention and intimacy when awake. Housekeeping and chores can be put on hold, your newborn cannot.  A baby grows quickly.  A second lost cannot ever be regained.

Use of Baby Blanket in the Crib

Monday, November 16, 2009

Your infant and baby will at times require a baby blanket.  The blanket will help keep your baby warm and cozy.  Blankets also make the nursery look beautiful.  You can buy different colors even in organic cotton or organic wool.

But, you will want to make sure to place the blanket properly on your baby.  Infants and young babies can have breathing problems if the blanket covers their mouth.  It is recommeded to tuck the blanket securely under the crib mattress and have it only go up to the babies under arms.

Important! Proper Placement of Infant in Crib

Friday, November 13, 2009

What is wrong with this picture?  Possibly nothing, it depends on the age and capability of the baby.  Infants should not be placed on their stomachs. This is an old rule.  Infants can suffocate if their face sags into a soft mattress.  Or they can rebreath their own air so much that they do not get enough oxygen.

Infants should be placed on their backs on a firm mattress.  It is best not to have soft items in your baby crib, where the baby might get tangled up or if the item is so close to the baby’s mouth it interferes with his breathing.

Safety in the Nursery!

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

When you are setting up your nursery, you want to considure your infant’s safety, not just how beutiful the room appears.  Placement of the convertible crib is important.  You will want to make sure the baby is not near a window where there are draw strings or cords that the baby could become entangled in.  Considur where there might be drafts.

It is also a good idea to check to make sure the crib meets US Safety Standards, that it is well built, and does not have broken slats.  A crib made from hardwood normally will last and can be reused, make sure it is put together correctly and all connections are tight.

Baby Sleep

Monday, October 19, 2009

Experts agree that parents should place a baby on his back for sleeping. Change the position of the baby’s head occasionally to avoid a flat spot on the back of his head.

The baby crib itself should meet current safety standards and the mattress should be firm.  Do not place soft items such as pillows, blankets, and toys in the crib while the baby is sleeping. Any soft item could be a hazard for a tiny infant.

I have found that it is not necessary to have absolute darkness or absolute quiet for my infant to sleep peacefully. What is more important is keeping to a schedule for both nighttime and naps. These times change as the baby grows older.

Sleep is a necessity for everyone.  Some sleep more than others do.  Pay attention to your baby and sleep time will be more pleasant for you both.

Planning for the Newborn

Saturday, October 17, 2009

When you are expecting your newborn baby, you might want to make some plans. If you know the sex of your baby, you can buy baby bedding with a boy or girl theme. If you do not know the sex, you can buy bedding related to a theme that matches your décor or expresses your creativity. But, you will want to plan on other items.

The bedding is very important, but you will also want to buy other items, such as clothing, diapers, wash cloths, etc. Do what the business people call brainstorming. Try to think of anything that might be needed, then make a list. Keep the list and add to it as you think of more items. Maybe a friend or relative will mention an item you can add to the list.

Then you can narrow down what is most important to make sure you get those items. Also, you could make a wish list for your friends and family so they will know what you would like as gifts. By planning, you will make it easier to get ready for your newborn baby.

Fitted Crib Sheet Proper Fit

Friday, October 16, 2009

To help protect your baby’s crib mattress, you can use a fitted crib sheet.  An active baby can grab hold of folds in a loose sheet and could possibly pull it off the mattress, entangling himself in the sheet. It is best to make sure the sheet fits the mattress snugly.  There should be enough fabric around the edges to hold it securely in place.

Organic crib sheets are very soft on your baby’s skin.  Made without the use of chemicals, they are durable, attractive, and good for your baby.  Organic sheets usually come in fitted with a variety of colors, so you can still have a stylish nursery.

Flat Crib Sheet

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Tiny babies are not usually covered with a flat crib sheet.  Because a newborn should be sleeping on his back, he will soon kick off the sheet. However, as the baby grows, a flat sheet under a blanket can help keep the blanket clean and provide extra temperature control.

For extra protection on the mattress, place a flat sheet sideways over the fitted sheet on the crib and tuck it in tightly. Try the sideways sheet for a quick change in the middle of the night for those extra spills and accidents. You can fold the sheet before placing it over the fitted sheet for even more protection. It realy works.

Converting a Baby Crib to a Toddler Bed

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

The steps to convert your crib into a toddler bed are simple:

  • Remove the crib mattress and set it aside.
  • Remove one side of the crib and put it in a safe place for later use.
  • Lower the mattress support to a level suitable for the height of your toddler.
  • Secure the toddler railing on the open side.
  • Replace the mattress.

A toddler mattress is built strong enough to withstand the toddler wear because it has the extra support necessary. A toddler mattress should last for about six years. This mattress will continue to provide service when your toddler bed is used a day bed later on.  If your convertible crib also converts into a full size bed, make sure to keep any parts in a safe place, where they will not be lost or damaged.
